Michael Herbert is a Chartered Electrical Engineer with over 20 years experience in power plant control and operation. He has specialist skills in human factors, computer programming and automatic control. He was previously Human Factors Team leader with National Power and the CEGB, working on ergonomics aspects of nuclear and conventional power plant operation. He was responsible for the human factors research programme and the human-machine interface prototyping and evaluation facilities. He undertook the development and assessment of computerised operator support systems for the operators nuclear and fossil-fired power plants.

Michael's background in electrical engineering has given him a detailed knowledge of the design and assessment of control and monitoring interfaces. He is an acknowledged expert in all ergonomics aspects of alarms within control rooms, including alarm presentation, alarm reduction and the diagnosis of multiple alarms. He is noted for his carefully considered and thorough approach to the solution of complex problems. In his spare time Michael enjoys hobbies that involve the countryside, including walking, boating and birdwatching
