Brian Sherwood Jones is an ergonomist with nearly 30 years experience of applying ergonomics to the acquisition of complex systems. He has particularly worked with systems where the design drivers have included reduced staffing, human performance, human reliability, and expert decision-making. He has specialised in usability assurance methods which develop and use processes and metrics to ensure that complex systems are safe and effective. This has involved the integration of human factors into system engineering activity. Brian has previously worked for YARD Ltd in Glasgow and Westland Helicopters Ltd.

He is a founder member of the Human Centred Process Improvement Group (HCPIG), concerned with developing and promoting best practice in Human Centred Design, and has contributed to the development of International Standards for Human Centred Design. He is the UK representative on ISO TC8/SC5 which is developing a new standard for ship's bridge layout. He has close links with the Digital Design Studio at Glasgow School of Art. Brian tries to combine practicality with analytical rigour. He believes that Human Centred Design requires multi-disciplinary teamwork and is keen to transfer ergonomics knowledge and experience. Recent assignments have included a number of HF management roles on the Astute submarine project, developing a template for ship's bridge design, and reviewing a nuclear safety case. Brian is committed to finding more spare time for his interest in classical music, and has recently taken up bowls.
